CPD & Consultancy
We provide training for current teachers, youth workers and PGCE students. Below are training packages we offer, though please contact us to discuss tailored programmes to suit your requirements. Our training is evidence-based and practical, and can be delivered in-person and virtually. Inset and Twilight versions are available.
We can also provide expert consultancy, including conducting a comprehensive review of your RSE curriculum. This works extremely effectively in tandem with training: through reviewing your existing curriculum and related policies, we can better identify training needs and tailor your course accordingly.
1. INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING RSE
Our introduction to teaching RSE provides an overview of several areas, including recapping key content, an understanding of best-practice approaches and an overview of statutory requirements for secondary schools. The training provides a solid grounding for new RSE teachers, and an opportunity to refresh knowledge and update curriculum content for experienced RSE teachers or PSHE leads.
2. Tackling sexual harassment in schools training
Please contact us to discuss long-term partnerships to tackle sexual violence in schools.
A) Sexual violence prevention training
Anyone working with young people will be working with young survivors of sexual violence. Schools have a duty of care to protect children from preventable harm, and research shows that it is possible to prevent sexual violence from taking place, being normalised and silently tolerated, through school-based education about consent, relationships and sexual violence.
This training is for teachers who want to provide the best support they can to young survivors of sexual violence and maximise their potential to prevent students experiencing sexual violence in the future.
B) Tackling online sexual harassment training
Underpinned by our Online Sexual Harassment Policy, this training supports secondary school teachers and school leaders to better understand and tackle online sexual harassment amongst teens.
The training will update teachers about the latest research around young people and gendered harms online. Our ongoing research in partnership with leading UK universities has found that cyberflashing, image-based sexual abuse and unwanted sexual advances online are the norm for young people, particularly girls, almost as soon as they join social media platforms. We have also found that the numbers of young people who reported their experiences were staggeringly low, with a mere 1% reporting it to their school.
The training will illustrate how online sexual harassment must be addressed through a whole-school approach. This will include recommendations for RSE curriculum, building an understanding of reporting tools, and why a “just don’t send nudes” approach is ineffectual and harmful.
3. Trauma-Informed Practice Training
Our trauma-informed practice training is designed for any teacher who has ever felt overwhelmed, embarrassed, stuck or frustrated when delivering tricky and sensitive topics within RSE. This training aims to build the skills and confidence necessary for teachers to effectively and compassionately navigate the dynamics that often arise in the classroom when discussing challenging topics, with a focus on understanding young people’s responses to trauma which might include; disengagement, embarrassment and/or disruption.
4. LGBTQia+ AWARENESS TRAINING
Our LGBTQIA+ awareness training for schools is designed to give teachers and school staff the knowledge and tools to understand gender and sexuality, empower them to best support LGBTQIA+ students, and create safer and more inclusive school environments.
5. Faith and RSE: An anti-racist approach
We acknowledge that schools need support, resources, and training to be better able to start a dialogue with young people, parents and their community to transform the way in which religion and RSE is discussed and perceived both within and outside the classroom.
This training will encourage attendees to reflect on and build their practice of working with students using an anti-racist, rights-based and inclusive approach.
6. Porn and Digital Intimacies: centring young people’s experiences
In today's digital age, young people are increasingly navigating complex online environments. As educators, it is important to understand young people’s interactions with digital technologies, particularly concerning their sexual development and consent.
This training session will equip teachers with the knowledge and tools necessary to address the topics of digital consent, online sexual harassment and abuse & pornography effectively.
7. An inclusive approach to teaching reproductive & sexual health
Reproductive and sexual health (RSH) in schools often focuses on avoiding both STIs and pregnancy, historically taking a very heteronormative view of sex and fertility. We find that young people are often curious about these topics beyond this though. Good RSH education can empower young people in their knowledge and understanding of their bodies for the rest of their lives.
Whilst our training will equip educators with the confidence to discuss topics like contraception and protection, it will also enable them to talk about sexual health in an inclusive and broader way.
